Mobile Operators
Establishing a mobile network is a time-consuming process and needs a lot of investment. Real mobile operators should obtain many certificates and approval from frequency planning regulatory, municipality and different ministries inside the country. They should build the network, provide a main station and many BTS station. Doing cell planning, frequency planning, building sites, making them on air, and optimizing the performance is the technical hard side of the network, while it has many software issues.
Mobile operators first established in 1960 in 17 European countries, named as GSM. The first mobile handset weight almost 1 kg and was built by Motorola company.
Virtual Operators
In the other hand, Virtual operators does not have any physical network, they do not obtain frequency certificates and do not build BTS sites. Virtual operators make contract with real operators to receive relevant services from them, and pay them based on agreed tariffs. However, virtual operators are focused on VAS (value-added-services) and additional services that currently real operators do not provide. Although virtual operators have their unique numbers, which is different from the operator they have contract with, all communication is done via the real mobile operator and the virtual operator only manages the software side of the technology.
The first Virtual mobile operator was Tele2, a Danish company. The it started in England by Nextel and in united states of America by Virgin Mobile company. It is interesting to know that there are some success stories about the virtual operators and their income. In Iran, the proposal of virtual operators are submitted to the regulatory and the government is investigating situations and conditions. It is probable that in near future we have virtual mobile operators in the country.
